This is a comparison between two brands we don't sell — so let's get the disclosure out of the way first. We're an installer, and what we install is Forever Lighting. You should read everything below with that in mind. But homeowners in Elkhorn and Papillion ask us about EverLights and JellyFish constantly, usually after an evening of tabs and conflicting spec sheets, and the honest comparison is genuinely hard to find. Most of what ranks is written by a dealer for one of the two. So here's ours, and we'll try to earn the skepticism you should be bringing.

What do EverLights and JellyFish have in common?

Almost everything that shows up in the brochure. Both are permanent systems: LED nodes fixed along your fascia, wired to a controller, run from an app on your phone. Both offer 16 million-plus colors, scheduling, and pattern effects — chases, fades, twinkles. Both were founded in Utah within a few years of each other, and both now reach Omaha through regional dealers rather than a local factory. Both will look terrific in a night photo.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Every permanent lighting brand looks spectacular after dark, which is exactly why night photos are useless for choosing between them. What actually separates the two?

The shape of the fixture, and therefore the daytime look. EverLights uses a bullet-style bulb that points outward from the trim, which reads as more traditional — closer to the look of classic Christmas bulbs, and more visible up close during the day. JellyFish seats its LEDs in a slimmer integrated channel designed to tuck under the roofline and disappear. If you want your house to look, at noon in July, like a house with no lights on it, that difference is the whole ballgame. If you like seeing a row of bulbs, it cuts the other way.

Whether you're allowed to install it yourself. EverLights is unusual in the category: it began life as a Kickstarter DIY product and still sells kits directly to homeowners. JellyFish goes through trained dealers. If you're comfortable on a ladder for a weekend and want to save on labor, that's a real and legitimate advantage for EverLights — and we'd rather tell you that than pretend it isn't true.

We'd add one caution, not as a sales pitch but because we've been called out to look at it: a permanent system is fastened to your fascia for a decade or more, and the two things that ruin the result are a channel that doesn't match your trim color and a run that isn't dead straight across a long eave. Both are much harder than they look from the ground.

What do they cost in the Omaha metro?

Be careful with the per-foot numbers you'll find online — most published EverLights and JellyFish pricing comes from dealer blogs comparing themselves favorably to a rival, and the figures move a lot by market and by house. Whatever brand you're quoting, insist on a real number for your roofline before you compare anything. A per-foot rate without a measured design is a guess wearing a decimal point.

So which should an Omaha homeowner choose?

Here's the checklist we'd give a neighbor, and it works no matter whose logo ends up on the controller:

• Ask to see a local install in daylight. Not at night — at noon. Daylight is where track color-matching either disappears into the fascia or announces itself from the street. Any installer proud of their work will have an address to show you.
• Ask who picks up the phone in year three. This is a ten-year fixture on your house. A brand headquartered 900 miles away, reached through a dealer who may or may not still hold the territory, is a different service proposition than a local crew — and it's the question the brochures never answer.
• Ask for a design of your own home before you sign. Which rooflines get lit, and which deliberately don't, shapes your result more than any brand decision on this page. You should be approving a picture of your house, not a promise about someone else's.
